(CNN)Long before the arrival of low-cost air travel, Bangkok Railway Station was the primary transit point for millions of travelers exploring Thailand each year.
Unofficially known as Hua Lamphong, the station recently celebrated its 100th birthday, first opening to the public on June 25, 1916.
State Railway of Thailand staff tell CNN about 200 trains carrying more than 27,000 travelers roll through each day.
The fabled Orient Express still passes through a few times a month as well.
Featuring neoclassical architecture, the station was designed by Italian architect Mario Tamagno.
Tamagno contributed designs to several historic Bangkok buildings, including the Oriental Hotel, Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall and the Neilson Hays Library.
Time is running out for those hoping to experience Hua Lamphong"s gritty charms.
The State Railway of Thailand is planning to move operations to a new station further north in the city"s Bang Sue district.
According to local media reports, it will open in 2019 and Hua Lamphong will be turned into a railway museum.
