What is it and where?
A concrete house in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. designed by Loyn & Co as a home for two retired artists. The low-lying building is embedded in the side of a hill and its roof is a field. It is the first private house to feature on the Riba Stirling Prize shortlist for 15 years.
How much did it cost?
Undisclosed.
What was the vision?
To replace an existing house with a sustainable, energy efficient live-work space, blending into the landscape. The footprint of the site is much bigger than before, partly because of the client"s requirement for two artist"s studios and a gallery-like space. But cutting into the side of the hill and building underground means its visual impact is much reduced.
